President Kufuor Attends Africa Union Summit

His Excellency President J.A. Kufuor left Accra this morning for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to attend the Tenth Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union from January 31 to February 2, 2008.
   

The Summit which is under the theme, “Industrial Development of Africa,” will among other things, elect a new Chairman for the Union as well as consider the report of the Executive Council on the Audit of the Union and that of the Ministerial Committee on Union Government.
   

Other equally important issues that will be deliberated upon at the Tenth Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union will be the appointment of Commissioners of the AU Commission and the adoption of the budget for 2008.
   

The Summit will also review the report of the Peace and Security Council and the security situation on the continent.
   

Ahead of the opening of the main summit on Thursday, January 31, will be a meeting of the five Heads of States comprising Presidents of Ghana, South Africa, Uganda, Gabon and Libya to deliberate on the roadmap to Union Government.
   

From Ethiopia, President Kufuor will continue to Rome, Italy to attend the Annual General Meeting of the World Food Programme.
   

President Kufuor was accompanied by senior Government officials.
