President Kufuor Meets With Kenyan Political LeadersThe African Union Chairman, President J. A. Kufuor has been meeting with Kenyan political leaders here in Nairobi in his attempt to help broker peace among feuding political parties following the dispute over the election results of December 27, 2007
The East African country was thrown into a state of violence after electoral officers pronounced President Mwai Kibaki winner of the elections. Reports say over 300 persons have died and several thousands displaced in the violence. President Kufuor met with President Kibaki this morning for over an hour behind closed doors at the State House in Nairobi. He later met with Honourable Raila Odinga, leader of the main opposition party-ODM at the Intercontinental Hotel for two hours. President Kufuor also met with a 12-member team from the coalition of Kenyan opposition political parties known as the pentagon. Discussions at these meetings centered on the need for all parties to stand down from their entrenched positions and to agree to meet together for talks without any pre-conditions. The leaders were also asked to impress upon their supporters to cease from all acts of violence and allow the rule of law to prevail. President is expected to meet President Kibaki for the second time this evening. This meeting may well be the defining moment for Kenya in terms of the direction the country will go; - back unto the path of peace and tranquility or down the road of violence and destruction.
