Gender Studies and Human Rights Documentation Centre (GSHRDC), in partnership with womankind, a UK based NGO have undertaken a voter education in support of women candidacy in the upcoming District Assembly Elections at Nkonsia in the Wenchi Municipality.

The platform was also used to enlighten women on marriage laws, women rights etc.

The programme brought together chiefs, opinion leaders, women groups and the clergy from various religious denominations.

The Project Officer of the NGO, Miss Aicha Araba Etrew underscored the need for women participation in running the country as a very important one, adding that women who held leadership position world over had mostly worked to improve the living conditions of the people they served.

She mentioned some key women who served the nation with courage, dedication and integrity.

She implored women to rise up and take their place in all spheres of society as the period they felt relegated according to her was over.

Miss Etrew demystified the erroneous impression some religion and society had created over the period regarding the fact that women should not take lea roles.

She appealed to society to support and encourage women who had the zeal to participate in governance. In the upcoming District Assembly Elections, the Project Officer charged women to come out boldly to compete for a seat in the Assembly.

The Assemblyman for Nkonsia, Honorable Ahmadu Yahya also added his voice to the call on women to contest for positions from committee level to Parliamentary elections and beyond.

He called on parents to send their girl child to school so that they could grow to become responsible adults.

Madam Esther Owusua, an opinion leader, thanked the group for their inspiration and asked fellow women to consider their involvement in governance as agents of change in bringing back development to society.
