As part of the events marking the senior citizens day on 1st of July, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, over the weekend organized a health screening and health walk for the aged in Accra.

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, who led the screening and health walk, said the exercise would bring tremendous health benefits to the senior citizens.

She noted that the rising population of the aged was a major issue in the country, adding that the Ghana Living Standards Survey Round 6 had put  population of the elderly (65years or older) at 5.4 per cent of the entire population Ghana.

Due to this, she said, the Ministry had implemented some policies and interventions aimed at enhancing the status of the elderly in the country."An example of these is the adoption of the National Policy on the Ageing with some specific interventions to promote the welfare of the elderly,” she added.

Mrs Lithur said the Gender Ministry, with support from the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service had initiated the process to mainstream geriatric care in the health care delivery system in the country.
