GRA/ ISD Collaborates to Sensitise the Public on Tax Compliance

A day's training workshop on national tax compliance for information officers has ended in Kumasi.   


The workshop, organised by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in collaboration with the Information Services Department (ISD), brought together about Hundred and Eighty (180) officers made up Regional, District Information Officers and Cinema Commentators nationwide.


The objective of the national tax campaign is to engage as many potential tax payers as possible and encourage them to comply with their tax obligations voluntarily to increase revenue generation.


The workshop equipped the Information Officers with relevant information on tax payments to enable them embark on a nationwide tax education campaign under the theme, “Our Tax, Our Future".


In a speech read on his behalf, the Minister for Information, Mustapha Abdul Hamid, assured the GRA that they made the right choice by collaborating with the ISD because the department has a track record of disseminating public information on national issues at the grassroots level. "ISD does not compete with any institution, be it public or private" in disseminating public information.


He called on the Ghana Revenue Authority to resource the Information Services Department with adequate funding to facilitate an effective campaign.


Mr. Samuel Dodoo, who represented the Commissioner General of the GRA, said that the Authority's target was generate GH¢ 34,000,000,000 to support government's social intervention programs and policies.


He urged the Information Officers to educate the public on patriotism and the need to pay their taxes no matter how little it was to enable government to fulfill its developmental projects.


The Acting Director of the Information Services Department, Ms Elizabeth Efua Essel, said the focus of the campaign was to help in attitudinal change in tax payment in the informal sector voluntarily. She therefore appealed to the participants to take the training serious and position themselves well with all relevant information to help achieve the needed target.
