A former Vice President of Ghana, Paa Kwasi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, has been laid to rest after a very dignified funeral service at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).


The event attracted top ranks of the country’s political landscape who converged at the venue to pay their last respects to the late Vice President.


The funeral service started at about 9:00 am on Friday, July 27, 2018 after the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his Vice Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and other dignitaries filed past the remains of the late Vice President.


Tributes poured in from the Government of Ghana, National Democratic Congress (NDC), family, children, wife, mother and the Mfantsipim Old Boys Association (MOBA 69).


The Vice President, Dr Bawumia, who read the tribute on behalf of the Government and the people of Ghana, described the late Amissah-Arthur as a gentleman, an ideal politician who served Ghana with utmost integrity and a dedicated Christian who lived a Christ-like life.


Delivering the sermon, the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Most Reverend Titus Kofi Awotwi, said the late Amissah Arthur lived a life worthy of emulation as a politician and contributed to the growth of the country by impacting positively into the lives of others.


According to Rev. Awotwe, Paa Kwesi satisfactorily served the country as the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and also as Vice President of the country. He described him as a gentle soul who loved God and his country. “He was so humble and had respect for humanity”, Rev. Awotwe added.


After the service, the funeral cortege passed through some of principal streets of Accra before his mortal remains were buried at the Military Cemetery while the final funeral rites and reception continued at the forecourt of the statehouse.


A memorial service was scheduled to be held at the Calvary Methodist Church, Adabraka in Accra on Sunday, July 29, 2018 from 7:30am-9:00am.


Meanwhile, ahead of the funeral service, the remains of the Vice President were laid in state at the foyer of the AICC on Thursday, July 26, 2018 for filing past by the general public.


Many Ghanaians including the clergy, politicians, members of the security services, civil servants and many others were at the venue to pay their last respects.


Paa Kwasi Amissah Arthur died on June 29, 2018, after he collapsed at the Air force Gym in Accra during a workout session.


Before becoming Vice President in August 2012, he was the Governor of the Bank of Ghana from 2009-2012.


Meanwhile, the government in consultation with the family of the late Vice President have decided to name the Moree Senior High School in his memory and honour. The School will now be known as the Paa Kwasi Bekoe Amissah Arthur Senior High School.
