AMA marks ‘My First Day at School

The Chief Executive (MCE) of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mr. Mohammed Adjei Sowah, has visited some basic schools on Tuesday to mark ‘My First Day at School’.

The visit was to interact and welcome fresh pupils entering basic school, to share his experiences, encourage and present some stationery as part of efforts to help sustain their interest in school.

Accompanying the Mayor on the visit were the Presiding Member of AMA, Mr Alfred Adjei, Metro Director of Education, Madam Margaret Frimpong-Kore and some officials from AMA.

Some schools the team visited included the Accra Sempe A and B Primary School, Calvary Methodist 1 Basic School in Adabraka, Kaneshie 4 Primary School, Abossey Okai Methodist School and St. Michael and all Angels Basic School, Korle Gonno.

As part of the AMA’s vision to promote education, the Mayor distributed pencils, erasers, drawing books, a pack of crayons, 5 exercise books and snacks to each pupil who was in school for the first time to aid in their learning and encourage them to stay in school.

Mr Adjei Sowah indicated that the Accra Metropolis housed over 164 Kindergartens with over 2,500 enrolments this year, adding that it was a national policy for government officials and senior members of society to visit kids on their first day at school. He assured the pupils and teachers of the Assembly’s assistance.

“My duty today is to come and see how you are faring and to give you a special gift. Next time when I come here, I will give you another gift so it means that you have to come to school every day,” he said.

The MCE reiterated government’s commitment in ensuring higher educational standards by encouraging children to take their education seriously and also to remove all barriers in education such as fees, feeding, school uniforms and other educational materials.

The Head teachers of the various schools expressed appreciation to the MCE and his team and asked for more support.
