The Zongo Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Central Region has declared their unflinching support for President John Evans Atta Mills in his second term bid.

They assured the President that they would do everything within the upcoming elections. The caucus made the declaration at the Central Regional delegates’ congress at Agona Swedru, as part of activities marking the party’s 20th anniversary celebration.

Alhaji Mohammed Mutawakil Kassim, the Regional Coordinator of the Caucus, at a rally after the congress, reminded Zongo communities of the untold hardships inflicted on the people of the Zongos during the Aliens Compliance Order initiated and enforced by the government of the Progress Party from which the New Patriotic Party (NPP) emerged.

He appealed to government appointees, such as Ministers, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, to support the caucus to function effectively.

Mr Samuel Oppong, the Agona West Municipal Chief Executive, said Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the Central Region would do everything possible to help the caucus because it was the backbone of the NDC.

He appealed to the supporters to educate the electorate on the performance of the government within the period that it had been in office and also on its policies and programmes.

Alhaji Fuseini Mahama, the Deputy National Coordinator of The Zongo Caucus, expressed his gratefulness to the NDC government for streamlining the operation of the Hajj which was often bedeviled with many problems before the government came to power. “Now it is easy and smooth for every Muslim to perform his or her religious mandate,” he stressed.

Alhaji Issifu Ali, the National Chairman of the Caucus, cautioned supporters of the party against what had now become “voting skirt and blouse.”
He pointed out that the President would be handicapped in Parliament if he did not get the majority of the MPs to support him.
