The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and an oil exploration firm, HESS Corporation, have launched a scholarship scheme for students in the front line districts of the oil exploration field off Cape Three Points.

Dubbed “The Scholars Programme” (TSP), the scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, administrative fees and educational materials.

The first batch of 71 students from the beneficiary of Ellembelle, Nzema East and Jomoro were presented with their package last Wednesday at Esiama in the Ellembelle District.

The beneficiaries are entering senior high schools, vocational institutions and nursing training colleges.

The Director of Operations of GNPC, Mr Thomas Manu, said the company and HESS had a common purpose and interest in working together to empower the youth in communities.

He said their focus was to provide the beneficiaries with and education which would offer them multiple career choices and a bright future.

The Country Manager for the HESS Corporation, Ms Sandra Gentile, said the scholarship programme was to provide new opportunities for the young people in the Western Region to inch closer to their goals.

She said it was important that “we provide the future generation with the foundation necessary for rewarding careers, which, in turn would support the future development of the local economy.”

The Minister for Education, Mr Lee Ocran, commended the two companies and urged the students to study hard.

He said there was no magic to success in education but through hard work and dedication to studies.

The Deputy Energy Minister, Dr Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, said oil discovery in the country required capacity building and skill development and as such that the communities in which they operated were supported.
