The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) for Sekondi-Takoradi, Captain (rtd) Anthony Cudjoe, has said government is committed towards supporting the fishing industry with the necessary logistics.

He said as part of government’s objective of supporting the fishing industry, a cold store would be sited in all the fishing communities for safe storage and that government would soon establish a fishing school at Anomabo in the Central Region to teach fishermen on the modern techniques of fishing.

This, he said, would boost fish catch and improve the livelihoods of fishermen and people in the fishing communities.

Captain Cudjoe made the remarks in Sekondi during the distribution of 62 Yamaha outboard motors to some fisher folks in the six coastal districts of the Western Region.

The Sekondi-Takoradi Mayor said 38 other beneficiaries would receive theirs after the necessary documentation had been completed.

The beneficiary communities include Aboadze, Abuesi, Shama, Sekondi, Dixcove, New Takoradi and Princess Town.

The outboard motors were sold to fishermen at subsidized prices. Government had absorbed all the taxes and import duties that were supposed to be charged on them in order to provide relief for beneficiaries, he said.

An outboard motor that was supposed to sell at GH¢8,700 is being sold at a subsidized price of GH¢4,700 to the fishermen, he said.

“This is in fulfillment of the Government’s promise of providing reliable machines for fisher folks towards ensuring their safety on the high seas,” Captain Cudjoe said.
