Mr George Henneh, Operations Director of the Environmentally Concerned Citizens Association of Ghana (ECCAG), an NGO has charged chiefs and opinion leaders in forest rich communities to support the campaign against negative environmental practices.

He said the forest was decreasing at an alarming rate through illegal logging by chainsaw operation, bush fires and bad farming practices.

Mr Henneh made the call when he interacted with the members of the Association and opinion leaders at Kasapin in the Goaso District, according to a press statement issued to the Ghana News Agency (GNA).

He said some opinion leaders sit unconcerned while few individuals destroy the forest for their narrow-minded gains. The Operations Director also charged the Forestry Commission to deal with perpetrators of such crime to serve as a deterrent to others.

Mr Henneh, however, commended JIR Timber Company for their contribution towards the sustainable management of the forest and also for the construction of roads in the Kasapin area of Goaso to help farmers cart foodstuffs and cocoa among other products.

He called on Ghanaians to adopt a positive attitude towards the environment in order to protect future generations.
