Ghana To Host 9th Security Watch Africa Awards PDF Print E-mail

Ghana is set to host the 8th Security Watch Africa Lecture series and 9th Security Watch Africa Awards on the 18th and 19th 0f October 2012.

The lectures which would be   held at the La Palm Royal Beach hotel is under the theme “developing regional strategies and best practices in the fight against crimes and conflicts in Africa.”

A joint statement released by the chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Dr Theresa Oppong Beeko and the International Coordinator of Security Watch Africa, Mr Patrick Agbambu, in Accra today stated that the lecture was in response to the challenges posed by insecurity and emerging insecurity to governments and people, arising from urban development and disturbing level of poverty in the rural areas.

According to statement, the Security Watch Africa awards Lecture Faculty would bring together renowned African leaders, international speakers, opinion leaders and the mass media to proffer solutions to the emerging threat of insecurity confronting the African continent.

The statement also noted that the awards ceremony will be chaired by the former President of the Gambia, His Excellency, Sir Dawda Jawara and aims at recognising, appreciating, encouraging and celebrating individuals, groups, agencies as well as organisations which have excelled in security administration, operations, practice and governance in Africa.

It also stated that the idea for the Lecture and Awards was borne out of the desire to see a safe and secured Africa that we dream of.
Participants expected, the statement said, includes high profile security chiefs and their officers from across Africa, particularly, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Namibia, The Gambia, Ethiopia and Zambia.

The lecture series which was introduced in 2005 also aims at identifying security problems affecting Africa and discuss these problems and proffer actionable solutions.

Past award winners from Ghana the statement said includes Alhaji Asuma Banda, His Excellency, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, former Vice President, Dr Mohammed Ibn Chambas, former president of the ECOWAS Commission; Dr Felix Anya, CEO, Holy Trinity Spa and Health Farm, the Manet Group, Ghana Airports Company and Exim Guaranty Ltd among others.

Security Watch Africa is a media NGO based in Nigeria but covers issues and events across Africa.

The Security Watch Africa Lecture and Awards have been hosted in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and the Gambia.

The SWA Initiatives also include a television programme running for the past 15 years on Africa Independent television, AIT beamed worldwide via satellite and DSTV and equally publish a security magazine circulated all over Africa.
