Thursday, 02 August 2012 16:13

It is the clash of the Titans, as an epic MTN FA cup final match comes on this Sunday between Ash Gold and New Edubiase at the Accra Sports stadium. A match which originally scheduled to have come on last weekend had to be postponed to this Sunday 5th August to mourn the late President of Ghana, John Evans Atta Mills.

For this reason, the match will be played in his honour.

With everything up for grabs, the winner of this year’s MTN FA cup will receive a staggering GHc 25,000, a set of 25 medals, a trophy from the organisers, and the icing on the cake: a place in next year’s CAF confederations cup tournament.

Both teams are eager to win the competition not only for the money, but also to win the remaining slot for the country in continental assignment.

The losers will also take home GHc10, 000 and a set of 25 medals.

After beating the likes of BA Stars, Yugola FC, Danbot, Tema Youth and Wassaman FC, the folks from Edubiase with their coach Anthony Commey and Club CEO, Salam Abubakar promise that the team is not coming to win the trophy and stay back in the country to watch the confederations cup but will compete in the tournament.

Coming from league position of 11th, 8th and 3rd respectively, New Edubiase has improved tremendously since they made their debut in the GLO Ghana league in 2009.

According to their CEO, the club’s sponsors Sildalco, have promised each player GHc 5,000 if the team wins this cup. This comes as no surprise as the team was paid a sum of GHc 100,000 after they defeated Wassaman in the semi-final match by their sponsors. This will be the first ever final match that New Edubiase is playing since the club was formed.

In the just ended GLO Premier League, Ash Gold defeated New Edubiase 2 – 1 at the Len Clay Stadium and lost in Edubiase by a 0 – 1 margin. The last time the Obuasi miners were in the final, current coach, Yaw Agyampong was the captain. It was in 1993 and he is very much motivated to win the trophy again, and this time as a coach.

Having gone through tough teams like Accra Hearts of Oak and Berekum Chelsea, Daniel Asamoah the captain of Ash Gold believes, those two teams have given them the needed encouragement to be able to defeat New Edubiase, and was hasten to predict that the miners will beat Edubiase by 3 – 0.

Couquo Fianoo, the CEO of the mining club thanked the organisers of the competition and said that “the elephant has landed to take his rightful place”. He also reiterated the point that Ash Gold are preparing to go to Africa, and for that reason, the Obuasi airport is been rehabilitated to facilitate the free flight travel of their team from Obuasi to anywhere in Africa if they qualify.

The organisers, MTN, have come up with plans to burst the stadium capacity come Sunday.

Main Sponsors of the match, MTN have promised to give away free credit, free T-shirts and free Caps to anybody who buys a GH2, GH5 or GH10 cedis ticket for the popular stand, VIP and the VVIP respectively.

If they win, New Edubiase will buy more experienced and good players for their journey into Africa, their coach said.
