The Ashanti Regional Director for the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr. Alhassan Yakubu has expressed concern about increasing reports that campaign posters of candidates in the upcoming district level elections are being destroyed and shredded in some communities and called for a stop to the act.
He said that it was criminal and punishable offence by law and called on those engaged in such unlawful acts to reconsider their actions to avoid trouble, adding that the candidates should also make sure they obtained the consent of property owners before they went ahead to paste their posters on buildings.
Mr. Yakubu was speaking at a community durbar organized by the NCCE on the upcoming district assembly and unit committee elections at Juaben in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality in the Ashanti Region and sponsored by the European Union.
The durbar was part of the stepped up efforts by the Ejisu-Juaben Municipal office of the NCCE to promote public interest and help voters to turn out in their numbers to cast their votes on March 3.
Mr. Yakubu reminded the candidates to ensure clean and decent campaign, free from acrimony, insults and tension and make sure they tell the people what they would do differently to bring development to their communities and that running their opponents’ down was not the way to go.
The Ejisu-Juaben Municipal Director of the Commission, Mr. Benjamin Kyere advised women and the disabled in the Municipality to actively participate in the district assembly elections as their inputs were very paramount in nation building.
Mr. Kyere said many women still felt that holding political office was the sole preserve of men and called on them to engage themselves actively. He said statistics had showed that the number of women in decision-making positions in Ghana was not encouraging adding that out of the 68 assembly members in the Ejisu-Juaben assembly, only seven (7) were women.
Students from the Juaben Senior High school rounded up the durbar with a drama to help drive home the message.
