Access Antivenoms For Snake Bites On Website - WHO PDF Print E-mail

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced the publication of new guidelines for the production, regulation and control of snake antivenoms and a website with details on the appropriate antivenoms.

The details include where the venomous snakes are located, their description, which antivenoms are appropriate and where they can be obtained.

A statement issued by WHO  in Accra said, "with snake bites killing at least 100,000 people a year and countries facing shortage of appropriate antivenoms, access to and information about available antivenoms is increasingly important".

Gov’t To Pay All Insurance Claims Arrears PDF Print E-mail

Government will clear all unpaid claims of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) totaling GH¢50,000,000.00 from next week.
   
 This will cover all outstanding arrears to service providers up to February 2010.Mr. Sylvester Mensah, Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), told the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi that, the Authority was determined to maintain a clean sheet.

World Glaucoma Week Launched PDF Print E-mail

Glaucoma, a silent thief of sight that affects the optic nerve and causes blindness of the eye, is the second most common cause of blindness worldwide. It is estimated that 4.5 million persons globally are blind due to glaucoma and that this will rise to 11.2 million by the year 2020.

This was contained in a speech read by Dr. Sylvester Anemana, Chief Director of the Ministry of Health, on behalf of the Deputy Minister for Health at a Public Lecture in Accra yesterday.

The Lecture on the theme: “Glaucoma, Get a Check up Today” was to raise awareness of the disease and to encourage the Public to take the initiative of having a check up before the disease gets out of hand.
