A dazzling first half performance yesterday gave Ghana’s Black Satellites a flying start in the African Youth Championship qualifiers after a commanding 5-1 victory over their Angolan counterparts at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra.
It was a scoreline that got Satellites coach Sellas Tetteh waxing lyrical about a “super takeoff” and a bright prospect for the African Championship. But his Angolan rival, Romeo Filemon, was left ruing poor defensive organisation, which makes the return encounter a rather tall order.
After 14 minutes of exchanges, Angola caught Ghana off guard and took a surprise lead through Mario Queta, but that early scare rather fired up the Satellites, who took charge of their destiny, turned on the style and crushed their opponents with five goals, two by Captain Ransford Osei, scoring in each half and brilliant strikes by Mohammed Rabiu Alhassan, Sadick Adams and Abdul Ganiyu.
Even by the 25th minute, the visitors looked a formidable threat with good midfield organisation and swift attack along the flanks, some of which exposed the Ghana defence. However, their game fell flat in the 31st minute after Ghana’s third goal.
