Italian President Giorgio Napolitano yesterday afternoon arrived in Accra to a rousing welcome for a three-day state visit.
Government has approved an undisclosed budget to redesign the mausoleum of the late President Dr Hilla Limann and the Gwollu Palace as part of measures to mark the 10th anniversary of the death of the former Head of State of Ghana. Â Â Â Â
President John Agyekum Kufuor met the Ministers of State aspiring to become the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party for the December 2008 Presidential Elections and accepted their resignation from his Government, "to take effect from the date of approval by Parliament of the Ministers designated by the President to replace them."
Mr Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, Minister for Finance and Economic Planning, yesterday launched nine booklets designed to simplify the technical language of national budget, economic planning and policy documents for easy comprehension by citizens.

Among the booklets launched in Accra was a 77-page abridged and simplified version of the 400-page 2007 budget statement dubbed: “A Citizen’s Guide to the 2007 Budget Statement,†which is the second of its kind after the publication of a similar version of the 2006 budget.

Government in collaboration with the Japanese Government is to set up solar testing and training centres for the implementation of Ghana’s solar energy Master Plan.
The World Pan-Africanism Council (WPC) has called on African leaders to treat Africans in the diaspora as the sixth sub-region of the continent to foster an accelerated unifying process.

In a recommendation to the Heads of States and Governments at the Ninth Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union in Accra, Professor Honorat Aguessey, President of the WPC said this was necessary to tap their expertise for the economic and cultural development of Africa.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Sports has cautioned that it would henceforth take drastic measures against communities, which would harass or intimidate teachers in the course of discharging their duties.

Mr Kwame Ampofo Twumasi, a Deputy Minister for the sector Ministry, who gave the warning, said the Ministry, had in recent times received reports of harassment of teachers in some parts of the country, adding that people in such communities would have themselves to blame if the practice continued.

 Alhaji Mustapha Ali Idris, Northern Regional Minister, has urged senior citizens in the Region to be advocates of peace and reconciliation, especially in this jubilee year of the country's independence.

He observed that the Region had for a long time been bedeviled with conflicts ranging from ethnic, chieftaincy, religious and political and added that this had retarded its development.

The United Nations Under Secretary General for Africa, Dr Asha-Rose Migiro, said yesteray that the world body was supportive of the efforts being made by the African Union to resolve conflicts on the continent.

 “The UN welcomes all the various initiatives being undertaken by the AU and other regional bodies to find an end to the problems in the hot spots of the continent,†D. Migiro told the press on the sidelines of the ongoing 9th African Union Summit in Accra.

 Ghana’s Foreign Minister yesterday described as “strange and rather unfortunate†arguments that the issue of a Union Government was being rated above other the political issues affecting the continent such as Darfur.
