UN Supports Efforts To End Conflicts In Africa

The United Nations Under Secretary General for Africa, Dr Asha-Rose Migiro, said yesteray that the world body was supportive of the efforts being made by the African Union to resolve conflicts on the continent.

“The UN welcomes all the various initiatives being undertaken by the AU and other regional bodies to find an end to the problems in the hot spots of the continent,” D. Migiro told the press on the sidelines of the ongoing 9th African Union Summit in Accra.

Referring to the conflicts in Somalia, Sudan and Darfur, She said the UN would continue to work for peace and security and good Governance across the continent since they remained important ingredients for development.

She said the UN would support the deployment of troops adding that, it had been involved in the resolution of the serious humanitarian crisis that the conflict had triggered.  “We are addressing the Darfur crisis. It is not only the UN that is there… the most urgent problem is to address the humanitarian issue.”

On the progress of the continent towards the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals, Dr Migiro said Africa was lagging behind the rest of the world, adding that improvements could be made in the MDG by governments to suit the country’s developmental goals through direct support in the budget.

“The MDGs must be integrated as a common vision for development in all the countries if the continent is to make any headway for the target date of 2015,” she said.
